Summary of Word processors in the classroom

Why use word processors?

Teachers can prepare, create, store and share materials for their classes by using a word processing program, and learners can use a word processing program both in and outside the classroom, to practice writing skills, grammar and other language points, as well as to present their work.

We will be focusing on Microsoft Word.

Word processors for teachers: creating materials

Inserting images and links

When we want insert some pictures in our creating materials or we want to include links to websites which our students can go to for further research practice. we can do inserting the pictures by click the “Insert” menu, then select “picture” and finally “from file...”. And to make your picture interact with the text you can click text wrapping by click on “view” then “toolbars” and finally “picture”, now select your type “tight”.

Creating forms

A form is a word document which has interactive elements in ti, resembling closely the kinds of simple exercises you might find on the internet.

To get started with adding forms to your documents, you will need to display the “Forms”.

Let’s look at the more useful of these elements.

1. Adding a text box to your form:

Type your question, then hit enter and click on the “Text form filed” icon. You will see that it creates a small text box. Click on it, then click the “format” icon. From here you can format what the text box does and the sort of input it expects.

2. Adding s check box to your form:

Type your question, then hit enter and click on the “Check box form field” icon. You will see a check box appear. Type your first answer next to this. Now press the tab key and repeat for as many answers as you need.

3. Adding a drop-down menu to your form:

Type your question, then hit enter and click on the “Drop-down form field” icon. Double click the newly-created drop-down, and use the “drop-down item” box to add each individual choice. Click “Add” button and OK.

Using Track Changes

These tools allow documents to be shared among a group of users, with each user’s changes and edits highlighted in different colors and identified by their initials.

Using Markin

This is another windows program that aids the correction of word processed work from learners.

Word processing activities for learners

Below are a few simple word processing tips worth bearing in mind and sharing with your learners:

  1. Encourage your student to save their documents in a consistent way, naming them with their own name and a description of what the document contains.
  2. With the price of external USB pen drives falling rapidly, it is advisable for learners to keep a copy of their work on one for themselves.
  3. Make sure that you check with whoever looks after your center’s computers
  4. Be prepared to deal with some computing terminology: hard drive, c drive, printer, word processor, save, print.

Using word processors: consideration

There are some potential downsides to using word processors – not the least of which is working with mixed technological ability classes where typing skills may play a large part in performance anxiety and in the pace at which activities are carried out.

Starting with simple activities, such as the ones we looked at in the first section of this chapter, and getting your learners used to the mechanic of word processing before moving on to the more creative side, will help this process.

Title : The tragical story of Doctor Faustus

Author : Christopher Marlowe
Year : 1589

City : England

Character : Doctor Faustus, Chorus, Wagner, Good Angel, Bad Angel, Valdes Cornelius, Three scholars, Lucifer, Mephistopheles, Robin, Beelzebub, Seven Deadly Sins, Dick, Pope Adrian VI Raymond, King of Hungary ,Bruno, Two Cardinals Archbishop of Rheims Friars Vintner, Martino, Frederick Benvolio Charles V Duke of Saxony, Two soliders, Horse courser Carter Hostess of a tavern Duke and Duchess of Vanholt Servant, Old man

Summary :
The story is talking about Faustus who has born of lower class parents, holds the lower class Faustus holds a lower status than kings and saints. He has a wisdom and abilities so he awarded doctorate. Faustus is likened to the story of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun with his waxen wings and as a result fell to his death when the sun melted the wax.

Faustus comments that he has reached the end of every subject he has studied, for instance, the skill of argumentative attributed to Logic. He dismisses Logic as being a tool for arguing; Medicine as being unvalued unless it allowed raising the dead and immortality; Law as being petty and below him; Divinity as useless because he feels that all humans commit sin, and thus to have sins punishable by death complicates the logic of Divinity. He dismisses it as "What doctrine call you this? Que Sera Sera (What will be, shall be)".

He calls upon his servant Wagner to bring forth Valdes and Cornelius, two famous magicians. The good angel and the bad angel dispense their own perspective of his interest in Magic. Though Faustus is momentarily dissuaded, proclaiming "How am I glutted with conceit of this?", he is apparently won over by the possibilities Magic offers to him. Valdes declares that if Faustus devotes himself to Magic, he must vow not to study anything else and points out that great things are indeed possible with someone of Faustus' standing.

Faustus' absence is noted by two scholars who are less accomplished than Faustus himself. They request that Wagner reveal Faustus' present location, a request which Wagner haughtily denies. We can see Wagner as a person who thinks very highly of himself. The two scholars worry about Faustus falling deep into the art of Magic and leave to inform the head of the university.

Faustus summons a devil, under the presence of Lucifer and other devils although Faustus is unaware of it. After creating a circle and speaking an incantation, a devil named Mephistopheles appears before him. Faustus is unable to tolerate the hideous looks of the devil and commands it to change its form to that of a Franciscan friar. It would seem Faustus is either deliberately unwilling or simply unable to see things the way they are. Faustus, in seeing the obedience of the devil (for changing form), takes pride in his skill. He tries to bind the devil to his service but is unable to because Mephistopheles already serves Lucifer, the prince of devils. Mephistopheles also reveals that it was not Faustus's power that summoned him but rather anyone that abjured the scriptures would result in the devil coming to claim one's soul.

Mephistopheles introduces the history of Lucifer and the other devils while indirectly telling Faustus that hell has no circumference and is more of a state of mind than a physical location. Faustus' inquiries into the nature of hell lead to Mephistopheles saying: "Oh Faustus, leave these frivolous demands, which strikes a terror to my fainting soul." Mephistopheles seems to imply that Faustus's questioning has reminded Mephistopheles of his origins.

SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

Technology in language teaching

  1. CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), appeared in early 1980s. It is required learners to respond to stimuli on the computer screen and to carry out tasks. The CALL approach is one that is still found on many published CD-ROMs for language teaching.
  2. ICT (Information and Comunications Technology) has become more widespread.
  3. TELL (Technology Enchanced Language Learning) appeared in the 1990s, in response to growing possibilities offered by the Internet and Communications Technology.

There are ten reason why we should use the technology in classroom, namely:

  • Internet is becoming increasingly available to learners.
  • Using technology is a way to bring the outside world into the classroom.
  • English, as an international language.
  • Internet present us with new opportunities for authentic tasks and materials, as well as access to a wealth of ready-made ELT material.
  • The internet offers excellent opportunities for colaboration and communication between learners in another place.
  • Learners increasingly expect language schools to intregate technology into teaching.
  • Technology offers new ways for practicing language and assesing performance.
  • Technology is becoming increasingly mobile.
  • Using a range of ICT tools can give learners exposure to and practice in all of the four main language skills-speaking, listening, writing and reading.

Attitudes to Technology

  • Timetable when you are going to use the computer room well in advance.
  • Some computer-based work can be done alone, for example using CD-ROMs.
  • This is an often heard-remark and reflects a very real lack of training in the classroom use of technology in ELT.
  • This remask often true for teacher who teach younger adults or young learner.
  • The use of technology in the classroom does not replace using traditional materials such as a black/whiteboard or a coursebook.
  • This dislike and fear of computers is often expressed by teachers who have had negative experiences with technology in the past.
  • Making new materials from stratch can be time-consuming, both for paper based classes and for classes using technology.

Skills and Equipment for getting started

  • At least one computer (preferably one per two students).
  • An internet connection
  • A printer
  • An audio card in the computer, and a headset for every computer
  • Basic software

Title : Sonnet 1
Author : William Shakespeare
Year : 1609

Summary:

I have been red the song of william shakespare. The song is Sonnet 1, it is the first edition of his song. There are 154 sonnets that i know and this is the each one. This is talk about life of him. I think this song has an unique lyric, with the shakespeare language can make the listener feel comfort.

Sonnet I

FROM fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

Beowulf

Title : Beowulf

Author : Neil Gaiman, Roger Avary

Year : 2007

City : United States

Beowulf is a motion film based on Old English epic poem from the same name, directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film was released in 2007 in United States. Beowulf's story of a hero who slays monsters has become a fanboy fantasy that panders with demonic energy to the young male demographic, the story is about fight of Beowulf and Grendel because of power and glory. The protagonist is Beowulf, pretoyed by Ray Winston. The antagonist are Grendel and Grendel’s mother, are proteyed by Cripsin Glover and Angelina Jolie. King Hrothgar is portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, Unferth is portrayed by John Malkovich, Brendan Gleeson as Wiglaf, Beowulf's sidekick,Robin Wright Penn as Queen Wealtheow, Alison Lohman as Ursula, Beowulf's mistress when he is an old king, Sebastian Roché as Wulfgar, Costas Mandylor as Hondshew, Greg Ellis as Garmund.. I compared the poem with the film stating that, "If you don’t remember this evil babe from the poem, it’s because she’s almost entirely the invention of the screenwriters Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman and the director Robert Zemeckis, who together have plumped her up in words, deeds and curves. These creative interventions aren’t especially surprising given the source material and the nature of big-studio adaptations. There’s plenty of action in Beowulf, but even its more vigorous bloodletting pales next to its rich language, exotic setting and mythic grandeur yet the 3-D is necessary to the film only insofar as it keeps your eyes engaged when your mind starts to wander. Stripped of much of the original poem’s language, its cadences, deep history and context, this film version of Beowulf doesn’t offer much beyond 3-D oohs and ahs, sword clanging and a nicely conceived dragon. It's the Beowulf saga once again, and the movie becomes tiresome and trivial - well done within the narrow limits of its aspiration but not worth the inflated effort. To do Beowulf again, there should be some reason to do Beowulf at all. In 2005, for example, Beowulf & Grendel revisited the tale in order to present Grendel as a nice guy with his own point of view. That was a very bad reason to revisit Beowulf, but at least it was a rea

Renaissance Poetry

A Ditty

My true love hath my heart, and i have his,
By just exchange one for another given:
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss,
there never was a better bargain driven:
my true love hath my heart, and i have his.

His heart in me keeps him and me in one,
my heart in him his thoughts and senses guides:
he loves my heart, for once it was his own,
I cherish his because in me it bides:
My true love hath my heart, and i have his.

Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586)

Summary:

The poet write about his love experience, he sad because his true love broken his heart and cannot keep their relation. The words was not difficult because he uses simple idioms and can understood by me.

English Teaching Aids

A teaching aid is a tool which used by teacher, it used for facilitator in teaching. It can help the teacher to explain the material in order to easily.
Help learners improve reading and other skill
, illustrate or reinforce a skill, fact, or idea, and relieve anxiety, fears, or boredom, since many teaching aids are like games.

Here the examplation teaching aids:

Lewis Carroll poem

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898)
A Boat beneath a Sunny Sky

A BOAT beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July --

Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear --

Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die:
Autumn frosts have slain July.

Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.

Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.

In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:

Ever drifting down the stream --
Lingering in the golden gleam --
Life, what is it but a dream?

British Literature

British literature is literature from the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. By far the largest part of this literature is written in the English language, but there are also separate literatures in Latin, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Scots, Cornish, Manx, Jèrriais, Guernésiais and other languages. Northern Ireland is the only part of Ireland still part of the United Kingdom and it possesses literature in English, Ulster Scots and Irish. Irish writers have also played an important part in the development of English-language literature.

Old English

old English (also called Anglo-Saxon, Englisc by its speakers) is an early form of the English language that was spoken and written in parts of what are now England and southern Scotland between the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century. What survives through writing represents primarily the literary register of Anglo-Saxon. It is a West Germanic language and is closely related to Old Frisian. It also experienced heavy influence from Old Norse, a member of the related North Germanic group of languages
