English Modern Literature (short story)

Title : A Mother
Author : James Joyce
Country : Ireland
Published :Dubliners
Publication date : 1914

Published by : "Ivy Day in the Committee Room" Followed by "Grace".
Character : Mr. Holohan
Mrs.Kearney
Kathleen
Mr. Fitzpatrick

Summary :

Mr. Holohan, who works for an Irish cultural society and has been arranging a series of concerts. Holohan’s bad leg is a prominent feature. We are then introduced to Mrs. Kearney, who was very accomplished at a young age but found that the young men of her class were intimidated by her, which prompted her to marry the working class Mr. Kearney “out of spite.” Her daughter Kathleen goes to good schools and learns to play the piano. Mrs. Kearney decides to use the Irish Revival as a means of improving the family’s social position. She is successful enough that Kathleen gets the attention of Holohan, who hires the girl as an accompanist at four vocal concerts put on by his society. Holohan and Mrs. Kearney collaborate well on the planning of the performances. The first concert is sparsely attended. The second one has more patrons, but Mrs. Kearney is bothered by the behavior of the audience and the casual attitude of the society’s secretary, Mr. Fitzpatrick. The third concert is canceled. Mrs. Kearney is concerned that her daughter will not be paid the full contracted price but is unable to get a straight answer on the matter from Holohan or Fitzpatrick. She brings her husband to the final concert, anticipating a confrontation. On the night of the concert, Mrs. Kearney is unable to get a proper answer on her request for full payment and insists her daughter will not play until paid. The dispute holds up the beginning of the performance until Fitzpatrick pays Mrs. Kearney half the agreed amount, promising the rest at the interval. Although the first half of the concert is successful, the description of the performers, either too immature or past their prime, is not flattering. At the interval, Mrs. Kearney is told the rest of the money will be paid in three days. An indignant Mrs. Kearney refuses to let her daughter play. Another accompanist is found, and Mrs. Kearney and her family, roundly condemned by all at this point, leave. The story presents both the mother’s greed and choler and the inexperience and condescension of the society’s members in a bad light.

Using ebsites is the one of easiest and least stressful ways of getting started with technology in the classroom. The web is a source of content which can use for finding or searching a lot of informations.

You can use web pages in the classroom in a variety of ways:

  1. As printed pages, with no computers.
  2. With one computer with an internet connection.
  3. In a computer lab with a set of networked and connected computers.

We have to explain about why internet content may be useful to them and you can teach abou attitude to operate and to use this technology.

How to find useful websites?

There are three basic ways of searching on the internet.

Search engine

Search engine is almost directly analogous to a telephone directory, or any other database of stored information, for example: Google which have twelve billion web pages.

Subject guides

Yahoo! Currently claims to index nearly twenty billion pages and still the search venue of choice for many people who remeber when it was the only way of searching the internet.

Read language searches

www.ask.com allows the user to type simple questions about anything.

How to evaluate websites

  • Accuracy, who wrote the page?, is the page content reliable and factually correct?
  • Currency, is the content up-to-date?
  • Content, is the site interesting and stimulating?, is it attractive and easy to navigate?
  • Functionaly, Does the site work well?, does it use a lot of large files or alternative technologies?

Websites which are more suitable for lower levels will include:

  1. Websites with simple, clearly presented text.

Fundation of Literature

Title : Samson Agonistes
Author : John Milton
Character :
  • Samson
  • Manoa the Father of Samson
  • Dalila his Wife (It should be noted that she is never named as his wife in any Biblical text.)
  • Harapha of Gath
  • Publick Officer
  • Messenger
  • Chorus of Danites
Summary :

Samson Agonistes (Greek: "Samson the agonist") is a tragic closet drama by John Milton. It appeared with the publication of Milton's Paradise Regain'd in 1671, as the title page of that volume states: "Paradise Regained / A Poem / In IV Books / To Which Is Added / Samson Agonistes". It is generally thought that Samson Agonistes was begun around the same time as Paradise Regained but was completed after the larger work, possibly very close to the date of publishing, but there is no agreement on this.Samson Agonistes draws on the story of Samson from the Old Testament, Judges 13-16; in fact it is a dramatization of the story starting at Judges 16:23. The drama starts in medias res. Samson has been captured by the philistines, had his hair, the container of his strength, cut off and his eyes cut out. Samson is "Blind among enemies, O worse than chains".

The reflection

Title : Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow

Author : William Shakespeare

Reflection

The poetry talking about how to face life with all our heart. We do not look something from the past time because past time have been finish and it is time for change our point of view to look future time. We have to be proud and brave when we meet problems or difficulties. We have to be sure if everything that happen is reality and we must be patient. Tomorrow is time when we must have plans and do not be afraid to have many dreams. I think the poetry is very simple and interesting and so meaningfully. The language is very easy to understand for teenager like us. The idiom so simple and familiar. I have experience that same according the poetry. At the time, i was sick and cannot move from bed, i feel lost my spirit to life for the future but my friends and my family always give me a support that life have to be face and we have to be patient when our life did not suitable with our dreams. Life is like river, flowing and calm. Yesterday is a history, today is reality and tomorrow is a mystery. Life must go on...
